…Or Damn Close To Free

If you don’t already have a website set up for your roller derby team or league, here’s how you can get one FAST and basically for FREE or a nominal fee. The following are strictly recommendations from personal experiences…

Basic Derby Website Setup Is Easy As 1-2-3

Step #1 Website Hosting

You need to find a webhost and then register the domain name of your liking, e.g. www.toughderbychicks.com. I highly recommend BLUEHOST. (I have tried GoDaddy and have been really disappointed.) One advantage to BlueHost is their Control Panel is very comprehensive and easy to use –we’ll get into that part later.

Bluehost.com > Register domain and activate hosting account

Step #2 One-Click Website Magic

Once you have done the above step, from your BLUEHOST control panel (which is just a fancy way of saying “log into Bluehost”), scroll down to the area where is says Software/Services and click on Simple Scripts. Simple Scripts feature allows you to start your website in basically one-click. I prefer WordPress for sure! And I definitely prefer these guys called Elegant Themes if you want more theme variety. I have used Joomla and Drupal, which are similar in theory, but they don’t compare. WordPress is so easy to use and is fully and completely free. Note: After the Simple Script runs, it will tell you what the admin password is to log into the WordPress Dashboard–this is where all the magic happens.

Step #3 WordPress

Now that you have done all that you will notice that your webiste should be up and running with the generic WordPress theme that is comes with. This template is very boring, so you’ll need to start Googling around for FREE WordPress Themes. Or, you can do it right from your WordPress Dashboard. When you find a theme you like, click and activate!

Good luck and please feel free to post questions!
