Today's world is a different place for young girls..... roller derby, tackle football, rugby are just a few sports that an aggressive, competitive spirit are mandatory. Being agressive doens't mean dirty - just the opposite. Competing at a higher level means giving it your all on the track, field or pitch then going to party with your opponents after the game whether you win or lose! I am one of the lucky ones whose coaches have instilled the sense of combat with honor in me.... even when you're 49 and still kickin' butt! Play with your heart and body!!!

Thanks so much for this wonderful blog;this is the stuff that keeps me on track through my day. Ive been searching around for this site after being referred to them from a colleague and was pleased when I was able to find it after searching for long time. Being a demanding blogger, Im cheerful to see others taking initivative and contributing to the community. Just wanted to comment to show my appreciation for your work as its very challenging to do, and many bloggers do not get acceptance they deserve. I am sure Ill be back and will recommend to my friends.

Thank you for this article.
I matured much faster than most as well and had issues while playing soccer in middle school and high school for being "too aggressive". I received red and yellow cards for simply wanting to win and having not committed any actual foul. I was simply using my hips and shoulders to move my opponent and take the ball away. Girls would see me coming and tense up and withdraw. The parents on the opposite side of the field saw this as an unfair advantage and complained endlessly. I never did hurt anyone as I was able to control myself and "pull my punches" for the weak. I loved mid half back but my coach put me in as sweeper (mid defender) to limit my contact with the other team..being used as a last line of defense between the opponent and the goal.

When I started derby several years ago, I was nervous that I would appear too aggressive. I would pull my punches again for smaller jammers and limit my hits to small ones. This only served to make the others believe that I was weak and not much of a threat. Then one day I was frontally blocking a jammer without impact when a much larger girl flattened me while I was distracted. If I had taken the jammer out ,as I should have, I would not have been distracted. I got up from the massive hit, took a minor penalty for not catching up with the pack and absolutely crucified the blocker who had hit me when the pack came back around. When she got up I took her off her skates again...to prove a point to myself and everyone else. People respected me after that, I got to play more as Pivot (last line of defense again), and made more friends.
In derby, there is no respect for the weak and those unwilling to commit to a hit. There is such a thing as playing by the rules and I firmly believe in that, but never again will I play nice! Thanks again!

Thank you for this post!! I've been wanting to do Derby for YEARS! Never had been to a bout. Just went last weekend and felt the same rush as you did that got those wheels a turnin again!! I'm 6ft and can SO relate to you.

I was looking this stuff up today because I was feeling at 37 I am TOO OLD to start doing this. But hearing that you started at 39 and dig it just as much as I know I will is a TRUE INSPIRATION!!
You ROCK! Thank you. Was out skating today (got a lot of work to do to get my stamina back!!) and will start training in March!! I can't F***ing wait!!
Thanks again!!

I've had this same conversation in my head, and then I remember how I felt when people looked at me and some of them whispered under their breath...that girl is never going to make it. She's never going to be able to skate well enough to compete. That pisses me off...and then I skate the practice, the scrimmage, the bout...whatever the skating is. I hit as much as I can and as hard as I can. Not always easy when you see people are not as stable as you, but now I know this is necessary to help them improve. Fantastic article Tripsy. You are such a wonderful part of TTRB and I look forward to learning more from you in the future.
